Welcome to Scallywags
Here at Scallywags we pride ourselves on having a unique early childhood setting where we offer a personal and quality educational and care program. Our trusted educators and centre director look forward to working in partnership with you and your child to create enjoyable experiences and memories.
Our Centre
Often referred to as the centre with the dinosaurs in the yard, Scallywags has been owned and operated by the same local family for over 20 years. During this time, children and families have been greeted by a consistent and highly qualified educational team who we consider to be the centre’s most valuable resource.
Our spacious, air-conditioned rooms offer a wide variety of resources that children self-select from. Community play (home corner), construction, library (books), art and nature resources are readily available in all age groups. Our yards are equally spacious and offer children the opportunity to be challenged and experience risk taking in a controlled environment.
Our Government Approved Kindergarten Program runs during Queensland school terms and offers children access to a qualified teacher in the year prior to Prep.
A free bus service is available to families in need of assistance in transporting their children to and from the centre. Please discuss these needs with the centre director.
Children with Additional Needs
At Scallywags we regard all children as individual and special. Children that have additional needs are welcomed into our centre. Working with other professionals, our educators will where possible, assist all children to participate in our program.
Our Rooms
At Scallywags we provide early learning education and care for children between 6 months and school age. Our roster ensures that your child has familiar educators each morning and evening helping them to be comfortable.
The Starfish Room: 6 weeks - 2 years
Catering to our youngest age group, our Starfish room offers a nurturing environment where educators tailor the program around the individual routines and schedules of the children.
With a ratio of 1 educator to every 4 children, we cap our bookings at 8 children per day. Our sleep room offers a quiet space attached to the main play room where your child can be safely monitored during their rest times.
Our spacious room and yard give our youngest the space to explore and develop and the opportunity to develop relationships with educators in the next age room.
The Turtle Room: 15 months – 2 years
Moving into the next room, the ratio changes to 1 educator to every 5 children.
Children in this room often experience a lot of firsts – toilet training, being responsible for their belongings, playing with other children rather than beside them.
Our Turtle room educators will patiently assist your child as their self-help and negotiating skills emerge and share the details of their triumphs with you.
The Octopus Room: 2 years to 3 years
Moving to this room is often referred to as “moving to the big end.”
Not only are children changing rooms, they are also changing into the big yard. Moving to this room is an exciting moment for the children and they enjoy their transitioning visits prior to commencing.
The ratio of 1 educator to every 5 children allows for greater supervision of children who are toilet training and nappy changing facilities are also available. A beautiful room with the outdoor art area situated just outside their door.
The Jellyfish Room: 3 years to 4 years
This room houses one of our pet budgies and the children are often seen with him perched on their shoulder.
Developing an awareness of environmental responsibility is a key focus within this room and caring for their class pet is an example of this.
In this age group, 1 educator is present for every 11 children.
The Dolphin Room: 4 years to school age
This is our Kindergarten room. Our Government Approved Kindergarten Program runs during Queensland school terms and offers children access to a qualified teacher in the year prior to Prep.
Our teacher and experienced room assistant develop a program based on the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines.
Each year there is a graduation ceremony to celebrate your child’s progression from kindergarten to school.
